WHICH NATIONS HAVE THE ADVANTAGE?

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS

Which nation(s) should you support? Read on:

BRAZIL (+350): The country with the most World Cup titles (5) has a massive array of one-named talent. But 20 years have passed since their last championship.

ARGENTINA (+550): They are undefeated in an astounding 35 straight matches, outscoring their opponents 70-17. Their goalkeeper could play Candy Crush during matches.

FRANCE (+650): Since the defending champions went on a 33-1 run that ended in March, they have won only one of six matches, prompting concerns over chemistry.

ENGLAND (+800): They invented the game, but there is a reason “bloke” rhymes with “choke.” The Brits have not won it all since 1966, but it’s not for a lack of talent.

SPAIN (+800): The Red Fury are technically strong and have scored in a world-best 20 straight matches.

GERMANY (+1000): The four-time winners from Deutschland have scored 58 goals in their last 20 games.

NETHERLANDS (+1200): The originators of “total football,” Clockwork Orange are undefeated in 15 straight games, scoring 41 goals in those matches.

PORTUGAL (+1600): They are winless in their last 10 matches against top-15 competition but are undefeated in 43 consecutive games against teams outside the top 20.

BELGIUM (+1800): Prior to their recent 1-0 Nations League loss to the Dutch, “The Red Devils” went 49 consecutive matches without being blanked.

DENMARK (+3000): “The Danish Dynamite” not only have a goofy nickname but, strangely enough, have not had a draw in 22 straight matches.

EXPERT PICKS

We asked Ian Joy, the former professional soccer player who hosts PointsBet's "Stoppage Time" show, and betting expert Jon Eimer, to weigh in on an Outright winner and Top Goalscorer.

IAN JOY

Brazil (+350) or Argentina (+550)
"Brazil could be the strongest squad ever, but are they a strong TEAM? If Argentina beat Brazil in the semifinals, they are my favorite to win it all."
Messi (+1000)
"Argentina will need Messi in the group stage because winning that is their easiest path to the Finals."

JON EIMER

Argentina (+550)
"This is Messi's final World Cup, and he is backed by the strongest Argentina side we've seen in ages."
Messi (+1000)
"While he is the epitome of a team player, he will want to end his international career with a bang."

WHAT ABOUT U.S.

STARS AND STRIPES

The World Cup is not for the timid. And generally not for the young and inexperienced. Can the U.S. buck that trend to advance from the group stage?

6 POSSIBLE OUTCOMES:

  • Qualify from Group B: -105
  • Group B Winner: +450
  • Reach the Quarterfinals: +400
  • Reach the Semifinals: +1400
  • Reach the Finals: +4000
  • Outright Winner: +15000

ANALYSIS:

Loaded with young talent playing in some of the world’s top leagues, the Yanks have won an impressive 27 matches over the last three years. But they enter with a whimper, having delivered flat performances of late. And they are the second youngest team in the world (25.2 years on average) to Ghana. So realistically, they’ll have to wait four more years to shock the world.

PREDICTIONS:

PointsBet host Ian Joy: Quarterfinals (+400)

“It might be my pride speaking, but I see the USMNT having life and making as far a run as their roster allows them to.”

Betting analyst Jon Eimer: Group stage (-105)

“While the USMNT did a phenomenal job to qualify, their lack of experience could prove to be their downfall.”

GOLDEN BOOT EDITION

IF I HAD $100 FREE BETS

⚽ [$40] Lautaro Martinez (+3300): Messi has scored .87 goals per game for his club team but only .55 for the national team and .31 in the World Cup. That’s a long way of saying we recommend his 25-year-old Argentinian teammate.

⚽ [$35] Kylian Mbappe (+800): The PSG star has scored more goals (41) this year than anyone in the world, and many consider the 23-year-old to be the game’s future GOAT. Plus he’s on the French team, the defending champions.

⚽ [$25] Harry Kane (+700): England is expected to go deep, and he is the country’s only reliable sharpshooter.

GROUPIES

Which nations will survive from group to knockout stage? Here are our odds to win.

Group A: Netherlands (-225), Senegal (+450), Ecuador (+550), Qatar (+1400)

Prediction: Look for the Dutch and Senegal to advance, with Ecuador as a darkhorse.

Group B: England (-275), USA (+450), Wales (+650), Iran (+1800)

Prediction: The U.S. will squeak by because they have lots of young talent while Wales has Gareth Bale and his cute manbun. Iran is old and teammates are literally arguing with one another about national unrest on Twitter.

Group C: Argentina (-275), Poland (+500), Mexico (+500), Saudi Arabia (+3300)

Prediction: Mexico are expected to go through, but look for Poland’s Robert “Lewangoalski” to singlehandedly carry Poland past the Mexicans (aka “El Tri”).

Group D: France (-215), Denmark (+220), Tunisia (+2000), Australia (+2000)

Prediction: Denmark is known as the happiest nation in the world and advancing will make them even more so.

Group E: Spain (-110), Germany (+115), Japan (+1000), Costa Rica (+5000)

Prediction: Spain is a great soccer nation, while Costa Rica has nice wellness retreats and Japan top-shelf sushi.

Group F: Belgium (-145), Croatia (+210), Morocco (+800), Canada (+1200)

Prediction: Croatia should get through on talent alone, but it’s a joy to watch Canada’s Alphonso Davies, already one of the world’s best fullbacks at 22.

Group G: Brazil (-290), Switzerland (+550), Serbia (+550), Cameroon (+2000)

Prediction: Switzerland and Serbia will clash for the final spot, with Serbs making the Swiss miss.

Group H: Portugal (-140), Uruguay (+175), Ghana (+1200), South Korea (+1200)

Prediction: Uruguay, without a doubt. Ghana is the tourney’s youngest team, and this is not one of South Korea’s better squads.
