ASK THE TRADER

It’s Derby Day! Are you still trying to figure out what bets to make at PointsBet Racing ahead of the Kentucky Derby [6:45 p.m. ET]? We called on Senior Sports Trader Stephen Quigley to help.

After Rich Strike pulled off a huge stunner last year, will there be more betting interest in longshots this Kentucky Derby?

Quigley: “Yep I think longshots will be a popular bet. There’s lots of uncertainty because this is a distance most horses running this race haven’t done before and a bigger field means more traffic than these horses have previously raced in. The impact of Rich Strike last year will drive many clients to find their own Rich Strike today.”

Is there one longshot in particular that is worth taking a stab on?

Quigley: “I liked Reincarnate at a +5000 price yesterday, and he’s now down to +1300. This horse would likely be even shorter if Bob Baffert was still training him. He’s crying out for the step up to a mile and a quarter, and I think this distance will suit him.”

Who is your pick to win the 2023 Kentucky Derby?

Quigley: “I’m going with Mage (+1700). He ran a good race at Gulfstream despite a difficult start after losing ground at the gate. He has a great draw today in Gate 8. I feel trainer Gustavo Delgado will have ironed out previous gate issues and Mage will run very close if so.”

BONUS BETS BONANZA

PointsBet Creative

PointsBet is giving away $100 million of Bonus Bets through May 30. So make sure to check your account during every Power Hour (starting at 12 p.m. ET) for a new Bonus Bet!

The credit is good for all states but NY. See Promotions page in the PointsBet app or website for full promotional Terms & Conditions.

There are a lot of options to choose from with today’s Bonus Bet, but we’re rolling with an AL East showdown on the diamond. Here are our three legs in this MLB SGP (+700) from Yankees-Rays [4:10 p.m. ET].

  • Rays ML: Tampa SP Drew Rasmussen didn’t allow a run in half of his six starts in April.
  • Over 8 Runs: Rays lead the MLB in runs per game, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and OPS. That’s a good recipe‍ for becoming the best team in the league.
  • Domingo German Over 5.5 K’s: German threw at least six innings four starts in a row with an average of 7.8 K’s. He’s posted a 10.2 K/9 this season.

EXPERT PICKS

NBA host Kazeem "Kaz" Famuyide and PointsBet client/pucks expert Qordaseus "Q" Alexander dug deep with five picks from today's three playoff games.

THE NBA HOST

Knicks ML (+145) @ Heat [3:30 p.m. ET]
"The Knicks have played well on the road all year long and in the playoffs. I think New York will spoil Jimmy Butler's return."
Lakers -3 (-110) vs. Warriors, Over 227.5 Points (-110) [8:30 p.m. ET]
"If his playoff trends continue, Anthony Davis is due for a big game after a subpar effort in San Francisco."

THE ICE MAN

Oilers ML (-125) @ Golden Knights [7 p.m. ET]
"Edmonton’s defense played terribly in Game 1, but the Oilers were the more physical team. Despite the Knights' G1 win, this feels like a let-down spot."
Oilers Team Total: Over 3.5 Goals (-121)
"In 5 matchups against Vegas this season, Edmonton has cleared this number 4 times. Every game the Oilers have won during the playoffs, they’ve scored at least four goals."
LET'S HOOP

IF I HAD $100 BONUS BETS

Julius Randle and the Knicks have won 2 of 3 road games so far this postseason.

There are two massive Game 3s on tap, and you bet we want action in both.

[$40] Lakers -3 @ Warriors: If you need some Warriors awful road stats, they’re 17-36-1 ATS in their last 54 away from home. L.A. has also covered in its last four after a loss.

[$30] Warriors-Lakers Over 227.5: Even more Warriors road stats? The over is 37-17-2 in their previous 56 road contests. The Lakers have hit the over ⬆️ in 12 of their last 16 overall.

[$20] Knicks-Heat Under 208.5: NY is allowing the fewest points per game (97.7) this postseason. The Knicks are also scoring the third-fewest (101.4 PPG), shooting just 29.1% from three.

[$10] Julius Randle Over 11.5 Rebounds + Assists: After missing Game 1 with an ankle sprain, Randle put up his most points (25), rebounds (12) and assists (8) of these playoffs in Game 2. We think another big performance is in store.

FIGHT NIGHT

ACTION REPORT

Canelo Alvarez has a career 58-2-2 record in the ring.

This Saturday is absolutely loaded. Kentucky Derby, NBA and NHL playoffs, a full MLB schedule and two major fights as the cherry on top.

Aljamain Sterling vs. Henry Cejudo

PREVIEW: Cejudo will fight for the first time in three years after retiring as the bantamweight champ in May 2020. He can reclaim his belt as a slight favorite (-115) over Aljamain Sterling (-112) at the main event of UFC 288 in New Jersey.

ACTION: Many clients are hoping that there won’t be a lot of rust for Cejudo, as he’s received 65% of the tickets and 57% of the handle.

Canelo Alvarez vs. John Ryder

PREVIEW: Canelo Alvarez will fight in his home country of Mexico for the first time in more than a decade. He’s looking to defend his super middleweight title as a -1600 favorite against John Ryder, who is a massive underdog at +900 (draw is +2500).

ACTION: The most popular bet for this showdown by both tickets and handle is Alvarez on the fight result market (draw no bet). Clients aren’t afraid to lay the juice there, with Alvarez sizable -2000 chalk.

TIPS OF THE TRADE

BE A BETTER BETTOR

PointsBet Creative

MANAGE YOUR BANKROLL

One of the most important steps in sports betting is setting up your bankroll and determining your unit size. You have to figure out how much money you’re willing to dedicate to sports betting, and make sure to never bet with money that you can’t afford to lose.

After you’ve figured out your bankroll, you then want to decide how much your average bet size will be. Ideally, a unit size will range from 1% to no more than 5% of your bankroll. Once you establish your unit size, make sure to stick to it when placing your bets and remember to never risk a huge percentage of your bankroll on just one bet.

PointsBet can help clients manage their bankroll by utilizing certain tools such as deposit limit (manage deposit amounts every week or month) and account history (review up to 24 months of deposits, withdrawals and bet placement).
