BACK TO SCHOOL

PointsBet Data and Insights

The college football season starts in a little over two weeks, so it’s time to look over national title odds. Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf and senior editor Max Meyer each share their bet to win it all along with a sleeper pick ???? (+1000 odds or longer).

LEAF’S PICK TO WIN: Michigan (+700)
This team was in the national semifinal a year ago and only got better. The Wolverines have the same quarterback coming back, and they beat Ohio State twice in a row despite the Buckeyes having the superior quarterback in those matchups. Their combo of quarterback, coach and defense makes them a legit threat.

MEYER’S PICK TO WIN: Michigan (+700)
Let’s take a quick look ???? at the top 4 in title odds: Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State and Michigan. Three of them have to replace multi-year starters at QB, while Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy is back. Those same three also have new offensive coordinators. Meanwhile, Michigan may have the best tailback duo in the country (Blake Corum, Donovan Edwards) along with an elite offensive line and defense.

LEAF’S SLEEPER: Florida State (+1600)
Florida State is a great value and the Seminoles could possibly have two top-10 wins in the first four weeks of the season (vs. LSU, at Clemson). Mike Norvell has done a great job rebuilding this program that I think is ready to take another big step forward.

MEYER’S SLEEPER: Penn State (+2200)
Just like for Big Ten conference futures, I don’t think there should be that big of a national title odds gap between Penn State (+2200) and Ohio State/Michigan (+700). Penn State will have one of the best defenses in the nation, and the offense may have found its missing piece ???? with 5-star QB Drew Allar.

EXPERT PICKS

Ariel Epstein is rolling with two MLB unders on a total and strikeout prop, while Max Meyer isn't afraid to back a big favorite.

THE PROP QUEEN

Padres SP Blake Snell Under 6.5 K’s (-125) [9:40 p.m. ET]
“The Diamondbacks have the MLB’s lowest K-rate against lefties. Snell has gone under his K prop in three of his last four road outings against low K-rate teams.”
Orioles at Mariners: Under 7.5 Runs (-105) [10:10 p.m. ET]
“Mariners SP Luis Castillo has a 2.79 home ERA, while Orioles righty Kyle Gibson has pitched better on the road this season. Both teams also have top-10 bullpens.”

THE SENIOR EDITOR

Aces First Half -9.5 (-120) vs. Mystics [10 p.m. ET]
“The Aces are a covering machine in first halves at home even with these giant lines, as they’re 10-3 ATS. The shorthanded Mystics have stark splits with the WNBA’s fourth-best home net rating but third-worst road net rating.”

MAKING MOVES

ASK THE TRADER

PointsBet Creative

It’s a busy NFL preseason night with six games, as several big-name rookies and veteran quarterbacks are set to play. It’s always important to pay attention ???? to line moves for any sport you bet on, and the NFL preseason is no exception.

We brought in strategy and trading analyst Jake Fisher to help explain the biggest spread and total shifts for this upcoming slate.

BIGGEST SPREAD SHIFT: Broncos -2.5 to -6 at Cardinals (10 p.m. ET)
FISHER:Sean Payton wants to make a strong first impression after deciding to play his starters for a brief showing. Russell Wilson will then pass the torch to experienced backups Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci. Arizona’s new HC Jonathan Gannon mentioned his starters will be on a case-by-case basis, with Clayton Tune expected to get the most QB work.

BIGGEST TOTAL SHIFT: Giants at Lions — 36.5 to 34.5 (7 p.m. ET)
FISHER: “This total flirted with 37.5 on Monday but continues to fall with mentions of key starters sitting for both teams. Expect to see newly signed Detroit QB Teddy Bridgewater and veteran New York signal-caller Tyrod Taylor early on before lots of playing time for guys fighting ???? for roster spots.”

MESSI MAGIC?

STRANGE BUT TRUE

PointsBet Creative

This massive Lionel Messi odds shift for MLS top goal scorer is all before the Argentinian legend has even played a single regular season game ????. Messi, with zero MLS goals, is now tied for the third-lowest odds with Luciano Acosta, who has already tallied 12 goals this campaign (T-2nd).

Messi and Inter Miami face off against Charlotte FC in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals at 8:30 p.m. ET. Messi has taken the tournament by storm with seven goals in four games and he’s -190 chalk to put one past the goalkeeper tonight. Messi’s scheduled MLS debut on Aug. 20 against Charlotte FC was postponed due to both clubs advancing this far in the Leagues Cup.
