Can LeBron win his fourth All-Star Game MVP award?

From LeBron James (+600) to Julius Randle (+10000), we list all 24 players in our All-Star Game MVP betting market. Let’s examine five tantalizing possibilities:

LeBron (+600): His kingdom extends to faux competitions like this one. He has been crowned three times (2006, ‘08, ‘16) and averages 22.9 points, 6.1 boards and 5.9 assists.

Joel Embiid (+700): He’s slipping in the actual MVP race (+500) but could best Nikola Jokic in this one.

Ja Morant (+1000): Potential to be the most dazzling player on the floor. Which is saying something considering the talent around him.

Nikola Jokic (+1600): Is he too unselfish to win? He has 13 assists and 7 FGs in his last two All-Star games.

Lauri Markkanen (+3000): Hometown guy. And surging. Scored 58 points in final two games before vacay.

EXPERT PICKS

PointsBet NBA studio host Kazeem 'Kaz' Famuyide and Prop Queen Ariel Epstein have their minds on Salt Lake City. PointsBet soccer expert Jon Eimer is pondering activity overseas.

THE NBA HOST

Jericho Sims, Slam Dunk Contest (+275)
“He is the biggest, bounciest guy in the field. If he’s got the creativity to go with his insane hops, he could keep the Slam Dunk title in New York and follow in Obi Toppin’s footsteps.”
Kevin Huerter, 3-Point Contest (+625)
“It looks like he takes the least effort to get shots up. He could get hot for two rounds and upset some stars.”

THE PROP QUEEN

Lauri Markkanen, 3-Point Contest (+675)
“It’s his home court, where he’s averaging 3.3 ‘3s’ a game.”
Suns NBA champions (+500)
“When Kevin Durant returns from injury, this team will become a balanced powerhouse – top-10 on offense and defense.”

THE SOCCER GUY

Osasuna v Real Madrid Under 2.5 goals (-130)
“I hate betting unders, but Osasuna are ‘under’ specialist and every time they’ve played a top-5 team this year, they’ve done everything in their power to park the bus and fight for the scrappy 0-0 draws.”
Joao Felix Anytime Goal Scorer (+175) in Chelsea vs Southampton
“Chelsea smacked Southampton 6-0 last year, and they’re desperately looking to return to goal-scoring form. The man who will lead this charge is newly acquired Athletica talent Joao Felix. The plus odds on him are too good to ignore.”

F-U-N IN FUNDAMENTALS

MAD SKILLZ

As we all know, Giannis can do it all. (AP Photo)

The format of the NBA SKILLS CHALLENGE is so complicated, the official description is 45 bullet points long.

Let’s simplify it: Three teams compete in three rounds of competition: Relay, Passing and Shooting. One team consists of three brothers (Team Antetokounmpo), another contains three teammates (Team Jazz) and the last, three rookies (Team Rook).

Team Jazz (-110) and Team Rook (+135) are favored. But our pick is …

Team Antetokounmpo (+450): One would think that that the three Jazz players would do best because they’re active teammates in their home gym, but we’ll go with the blood-is-thicker theory.

LONG SHOTS

BOMBS AWAY

Hey, it's another 23! Lauri Markkanen has flourished away from Chicago. (AP Photo)

Many of the NBA’s most accurate bombers (Malcolm Brogdon, Desmond Bane) were left off the invite list, yielding to big names like Damian Lillard (+475), Jayson Tatum (+550) and Tyler Herro (+800). Even Julius Randle (+900) got the call. He’s shooting 33.8% from downtown.

Let’s examine:

SAFE PICK. Buddy Hield (+400): He drills nearly four 3-pointers a game for the Pacers and won the contest in 2020.

BEST VALUE. Lauri Markkanen (+675): “The Finnisher” is having such a terrific season, he is the +125 favorite for Most Improved. He is draining 41.3% of his bombs for the Jazz.

INSIDER PICK. Tyrese Haliburton (+700): The Pacers guard is surging. He has nailed 52.9% of his catch-and-shoot 3s over the last 15 games. Let’s see what he can do with a rack!

SLAM DUNK SELECTIONS

WHERE’S THE VALUE?

Indulge us. MJ is 60.

We wish we could offer this betting market everywhere, but state regulators get the final call on subjective contests like this. These are available in Michigan, Ohio, Kansas, Virginia, West Virginia and Ontario.

  • Mac McClung (+150): The recent 76ers call-up and YouTube sensation will play the role of Billy Hoyle (Woody Harrelson in “White Men Can’t Jump”).
  • Jericho Sims (+275): This Knicks ‘big’ has gotten plenty of practice throwing down in games. More than 63% of his shot attempts are dunks.
  • Kenyon “KJ” Martin Jr. (+300): His Rocket fuel/inspiration is father Kenyon Martin, the rugged forward who logged 15 years in the league.
  • Trey Murphy III (+375): If the 6-8 Pelicans guard can windmill it during a game (against the Celtics), then we think he’s got the bounce to impress the judges.

PointsBet Data and Insights

Let’s examine the five most popular bets for the NBA title:

  • Nuggets (+800): Jokic is averaging a triple-double and is -300 to win his third straight MVP. Denver hit 40 wins before the All-Star break for the first time in franchise history.
  • Warriors (+1600): Maybe they pull off the same rope-a-dope as last year, when they entered the playoffs at +950 and ran the table.
  • Bucks (+420): Giannis is unstoppable and they just beat the Celtics – albeit barely and unimpressively, considering the lack of Jayson Tatum.
  • Celtics (+225): This is a hungry bunch after falling in last year’s Finals. And how about Boston’s depth? Sam Hauser, come on down!
  • Lakers (+5000): LeBron and sulking AD are still front and center. But at 27-32, they need to make some birdies and eagles️‍♂️ down the stretch.
