MAKE THE CASE‍⚖️

May 18, 2023

The WNBA season tips off tomorrow, and the biggest storyline heading into this campaign is the battle of the superteams. We made arguments for both the Aces and Liberty, and then came up with a final verdict for our preseason title pick.

Aces

• All four top scorers from last year’s title team return, with future Hall of Famer Candace Parker added into the fold.

• The Liberty’s new talent will likely need time to gel, whereas the Aces have plenty of familiar faces back.

Becky Hammon became the first WNBA rookie head coach to win the title, and the Aces unleashed a historically efficient offense in her first year at the helm.

Liberty

• New York landed two former MVPs this offseason with Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart.

Sabrina Ionescu shined playing off the ball after the Liberty acquired Crystal Dangerfield midseason to run point last year. Ionescu gets to be in that role again, this time with Courtney Vandersloot at point.

• Both teams have star-studded starting fives, but the Liberty have the stronger bench and arguably the deepest rotation in the WNBA.

Our Title Pick: Liberty

Editor’s Note: I don’t think the gap between the Mystics (+1200) and the Aces/Liberty is as big as the odds suggest. Elena Delle Donne is healthy again, and Brittney Sykes was a strong under-the-radar signing to bolster the backcourt.
