BACK TO SCHOOL

July 14, 2023

It’s the final day of SEC preview week, and former NFL QB Ryan Leaf and senior editor Max Meyer have one more pick to share. After diving into win totals for the conference, they now choose their top Heisman bet among SEC players.

LEAF: Joe Milton (+2500)

He’s always had a big arm and I like the fact that he chose to stay in Knoxville even after Hendon Hooker beat him out last season. Tennessee has opportunities to win massive games with Georgia and Alabama on the schedule, and Milton will be in the mix if the Volunteers contend for the SEC crown.

MEYER: Joe Milton (+2500)

There are not many offensive minds I trust more than Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel. His offenses (at Tennessee and UCF) have finished either first or second in 40+ yard plays in three of the past four seasons. Milton may have the strongest arm in the country, and he ended last season on a high note after tossing 251 yards and three touchdowns in a bowl game win over Clemson. At +2500, it’s worth a gamble that he’ll put it all together.
